School Overview

The school was founded in 1969 by the late industrialist-philanthropist Shri. Gopalkrishna Singhania in memory of his wife late Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania. Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School is located in the lush green surroundings of Jekegram in the heart of the city of Thane.

With a humble beginning with 400 students today the school houses more than 6700 students from KG to Std. 12 and IB DP and 400 plus staff members. The school is an unaided linguistic minority institution run by the Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School Trust. The school’s motto is “Offer equal opportunities to all so that they could rise to their fullest potential”

In consonance with the school song which stresses development of sensitive human beings beyond academic learning, the lessons of hard work, unity and integrity are infused into the curriculum and all teaching-learning experiences. In our early years program we want our little children to have a sense of wonder, curiosity and joy in learning. The interactive classrooms open vistas of self-discovery. In the Elementary school our children explore and create as a part of Theme-based project way of learning. The school follows Theme based Project method of learning for grades KG to IV, being the 1st School in the country to have introduced the online examinations. The ‘Experiential Method of Learning in Primary Education’ was studied by the eminent faculty of IIM-Ahmedabad as a case study for “Innovations in Education” with sustainable development in the field of project planning. ‘Project Method of Learning in Primary Education at Singhania School’ – a case study at IIM – Ahmedabad. The case study has proved its merits and has been introduced in the curriculum for PGP at IIM-A. The school encourages the formation of good skills and attitudes along with the knowledge component. The in-house curriculum is so structured so as to guide students to handle knowledge and acquire life skills comfortably. From grade V and above the students move from a complete hands-on experiential integrated methodology to a more formalized approach to learning and assessment. The school ensures practice of the previously learned skills and knowledge and Introduction of new ones. The Junior School is a time for significant changes physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally. We create opportunities for them to research and experiment, building in them a spirit of inquiry, sparking bold thoughts, thus igniting young minds to blaze new trails. In the Senior school we ensure that our students create for themselves a unique identity, with a genuine understanding of the world around them. The school allows flexibility that helps students explore their interests. The School offers the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Programme to the students in classes IX and X & Indian School Certificate (ISC) programme to students of classes XI & X II. English Literature, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Mathematics. Physics, Chemistry. Biology, Environmental Science, History & Civics. Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Accounts, Commerce, Computer Science, Technical Drawing, Home Science, Cookery, Fine Arts, Music, Physical Education, Military Training, Scouts and Guides, Information and Communication Technology are the subjects offered in the School. To enable learning by understanding in a joyful environment, the school offers several open outdoor learning spaces including a botanical spice and butterfly garden, water pond, traffic park for children, vermi-compost arena and mini-aquarium. These serve as informal learning spaces where children learn about medicinal plants, waste recycling and management, and environment conservation. All of these would propel each one to an all important goal - Excellence.
